What it is
Surgical removal of an eye. It is recommended when an eye is blind and painful, and when that pain cannot be controlled any other way.
When it is recommended
- Glaucoma that no longer responds to medication — persistently raised pressure inside the eye is genuinely painful, continuously
- Severe trauma or a ruptured globe
- A tumour of the eye or orbit
- Infection or inflammation inside the eye that cannot be cleared
- A chronically painful, non-visual eye
The thing owners find hardest
Most owners' first reaction is that removing an eye is drastic. The honest framing is the other way round: the eye in question is usually already blind, and it hurts. Animals hide ocular pain well — what owners describe afterwards, almost without exception, is a pet that became brighter and more themselves once the pain was gone.
Pets adapt to one-eyed vision quickly. They navigate by smell and hearing far more than we do.
What happens
Under general anaesthesia, the eye and its associated structures are removed, and the eyelids are closed permanently over the socket. The result is a closed, fur-covered lid with no opening. Tissue is sent for histopathology when a mass or unexplained disease is involved.
Recovery
Discharge timing depends on your pet’s condition. Beyond Pets provides hospitalization during business hours only. If overnight monitoring is needed, our team will discuss referral to an appropriate facility.
- First 48–72 hours. Swelling and bruising around the socket are expected and peak around day two to three, then settle. Some blood-tinged discharge early is normal.
- Days 1–14. E-collar at all times. No rubbing the face on furniture or carpet, no baths, no rough play with other pets in the house.
- Recheck at 10–14 days for the incision and suture removal.
- Adjustment. Pets navigate well with one eye. Expect a few weeks of bumping into things on the blind side and more caution on stairs and in the dark; most adapt within weeks.
Call us if the swelling worsens after day three rather than settling, the incision opens or discharges, your pet is in pain despite the medication sent home, or they stop eating.

Will my pet be in pain afterwards? There is post-operative pain, and it is managed. It is finite, unlike the pain of the condition that led here.
Can we save the eye instead? When there is a realistic prospect of a comfortable eye, that is always preferred and is discussed first. Enucleation is for eyes where that prospect has gone.
How will it look? A closed, fur-covered eyelid. No socket, no opening.
Will my pet be able to get around? Yes, and faster than most owners expect.
